Flamethrowers are now a droppable weapon in CoH 2.They can beat Conscripts but more importantly significantly damage units in buildings. During mid-game pioneers start seeing combat more frequently as they flamethrower upgrade is enormously powerful.While generally poor fighting infantry, they're still effective when flanking weapon crews or snipers if close enough.
Pioneers are first used for building initial tier 1 buildings or capturing a specific point.Anti-Tank mines will generally put most tanks at half-health with an engine critical, still triggered by infantry.
